Missouri River

The Missouri River Relief is a grassroots, volunteer and equipment-based organization dedicated to reconnecting people to the Missouri River through hands-on river clean-ups and education events.  The organization was formed in 2001 and since then has hosted 55 Missouri River clean-ups, bringing 12,000 volunteers to clean 537 tons of trash from 588 miles of the river.  They have participated in and hosted clean-ups in six states, from the Mississippi River to Yankton, S.D.

River Clean-ups accomplish a few things; they connect people proactively in stewardship of the Missouri River, often putting people on the river for the first time. They also educate people about the problem of solid waste on our streams and rivers and physically bring interested parties together to accomplish something real.

St. Joseph is on the 2010 River Clean Up listVolunteers are needed to make this a success!  Volunteers will get a free boat ride to locations along the river to pick up as much trash as possible in the morning from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.  Volunteers should wear sturdy boots or shoes and work and weather appropriate clothesBring sunscreen and bug spray T-shirts, work gloves, drinking water, reusable water bottles, life jackets, trash bags, tools, boat rides to clean up sites, and lunch will be provided

Hey Dona!  What a great way to network AND get people on the River!  I work with our Rotary Club here to do greenway cleaning and that is one of our favorite projects--we have a blast doing it and generally brings a few of us back to using the greenways as we should.

Debe:  Volunteering is absolutely one of the best ways to network and have fun!  I work with Kiwanis and we have a blast on our work days!  Not for sure what the status of the clean up is at this very minute as the river it now out of its banks from all the rain and it still raining.  Hope Ray is recovering nicely.
