51 Mile "Show Me" Tractor Cruise-St Joseph MO

I know what you are thinking, a Tractor Parade how silly.

This is just not any Tractor Cruise but nearly 250 tractors rode 51 miles for Charities. Many riders traveled from various states to participate in the ride and to once again ride with the Red Tractors and Green Tractors in Northwest Missouri.

As the ride started out they were hit by a storm, then the day turned to a perfect sunny afternoon to cruise through St Joseph on a tractor.

Although the grand total is not in yet, the Tractor Cruise normally raises about $30,000 or more. This year the event raised money for Northwest Missouri chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Dream Factory.

Kathy Boatwright owner of Kat & Co said that 90+ vendors have rented outdoor booth space for the Black Top Junk Swap to date. Kathy commented that food vendors, craft and flower vendors are a few of the current vendors renting space for the outdoor event.

Making cookies for the Holidays:

Mike Hendricks knows the difference in cookies. Mike is a cell phone game programer and says he does not consider himself a cook but rather makes cookies because he does not like the ready made cookies.

Mike according to the St. Joseph News-Press entered his "cookie recipe" in the Cook's Country best holiday cookie contest, placing runner up in the national contest. Mike credits his wife for her help who also has some cooking contest experience as well. Mrs. Hendricks won the Cook's Country grand price about 3 years ago.

The Annual Sugar Plum Festival kicked off last night with a preview open house and will open the doors today having festivities happening all weekend long. The Sugar Plum festival is an annual event hosted by the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art offering great gifts and ideas for the holiday season.

The festival transforms the museum into a holiday gallery giving shoppers that unique experience. Outside of buying gifts you can also enjoy the lunch café, wine tasting, bakery items, and much more.

When your mouth is watering for a nice, juicy steak where do you go? The Hoof and Horn Steakhouse in St. Joseph, MO is known for its local flavor and serving up one of the best steaks ever! Operating as one of St. Joseph's oldest restaurants on the old Stockyards grounds, serving excellent hand-cut aged beef and homemade specialties, I can't imagine any other place to go.

The Old Hoof and Horn was built in 1898, the same year as the Stockyard Exchange Building. The building originally began as a saloon and brothel. In 1907 a retired policeman bought the building and turned it into a café. It has since them carried on as a restaurant. Jack and Rosie Miller purchased the building in 1963 serving up steaks that were butchered and aged right on-site. They started a nice tradition in the building and were dedicated to their quality and consistency gaining a great reputation. In 1986, Roy Swope took over the business carrying on that same service. Roy and family are still the current owners serving St. Joseph, giving customers a great dining pleasure.

In 1990 the Hoof and Horn was the first restaurant to receive the MO Beef Backer Award. In 2002 the Hoof and horn was inducted into the MO Beef Hall of Fame.

In 2007, the Hoof and Horn was destroyed by fire. However the building was reincarnated and re-opened in 2009. Not everything was ruined by the fire, today some pictures and artifacts are displayed on the wall that were original pieces of the building. The same cooks and crews are back on staff and are glad to be there. They were able to reopen after a great deal of community support and donations.

Although there has been change in ownership over the years, renovations, and menu changes a few have remained the same. The location, history and quality...each visit is an experience in itself. It would be amazing if walls could talk to tell the stories of the past 112 years.

Dee and Roy Swope not only spend time cooking and waiting tables with their 5 children who all also work there, but they consider all of the employees family. They are all very close knit and have been a family for over a decade. Even though they have all been through hard times, the fire being the hardest of all, they have all stuck together like family does.

The Hoof and Horn crew is very involved in the community. They have adopted the Noyes Home as their ‘charity'. Each year the staff hosts a night that they all donate work for free and put all the proceeds into an ‘Activity Fund'. All funds raised are put towards outings that they take the children on through out the years such as trips to Worlds of Fun, Great Wolf Lodge, the Omaha Zoo, etc. They loved this idea knowing that they would be helping these kids all year long, not just for one specific holiday. They are giving these children experiences that they just simply wouldn't have otherwise. The staff gets more excited about it each year...it just feels good to give something.

The Hoof and Horn family is a prime example of your ‘local restaurant'. They aren't only here to benefit themselves but more than anything our community. Being the oldest restaurant in St. Joseph it carries on a great name for the city. Many visitors walk through the doors each year looking for that unique dining experience. And they have many visitors that have come back even 20+ years later remembering that ‘steakhouse on the stockyards'. Swope has many amazing stories to tell, and if you stop in to dine he will be glad to share them with you.

Looking for some autumn fun? Get lost in St. Joseph's Corn Maze! Take the kids out and let them run wild as they try to navigate their way from start to finish weaving in and out of the corn field. This year the field is shaped like ‘Max' Missouri Western's Griffon (Mascot). It is not a haunted event and is targeted for families of all ages. The maze has a beginner and advanced route.

In addition to the corn maze you can also participate in other activities such as hayrides, pedal tractors, face paintings and corn bins. On site you can purchase mums, pumpkins, cornstalks and straw. The property also includes a fire pit that you can rent. The fire, hot dogs, buns, soda & chips are provided all you have to do is make your reservation and show up!

VOICES OF THE PAST - MOUNT MORA CEMETERY-ST JOSEPH MO

Mount Mora cemetery is the oldest operating cemetery in St. Joseph, MO, established in 1851. Years ago, Mount Mora was the most well known burial ground for many well known and wealthy citizens. Today the grounds are visited by many to re-live the past. Many families visit after researching their family heritage and they come to see the graves of their deceased family members. Others attracted to the site are those that have a passion for history and they come to see the grave sites of Coleman Hawkins, Jeff Thompson, Joseph Robidoux's son, two pony express riders, three Missouri governors, and many other well known names.

The graveyard consists of hundreds of unique marble and granite tombstones. Near the main gate you can view the ‘Who's Who' wall to learn more on the lives of those that now rest at Mount Mora. It may seem odd for some, but many people visit the cemetery each year; some with good reason and some just for fun.

It seems hard to believe that visiting a cemetery could be fun but it is possible and you too can partake. On Thursday, October 28 and Friday, October 29 you can re-live St. Joseph's past with living history characters of some of St. Joseph's earliest citizens. As you tour the property re-en-actors will be standing beside the graves and tell you the story of a life on a select number of people. The tours will take place at 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM and tickets are $13 for St. Joseph Museum members and $15 for non-members. Tickets sell out quick, call 816.232.8471 for ticket information.

Fall-A-Beautiful-Season-To-Enjoy-Mother-Nature-St Joseph MO

Such a wonderful time of year to take in Mother Nature, enjoy a nice walk outdoors and view the beautiful sceneries. I'd like to share with you some information on the St. Joseph Parkway System and some photos I have along the parkway from last year. I think it will be some motivation to get you all out for a little hike, bike or ride along the 26-mile system.

The St. Joseph Parkway System is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is 26 miles of parkway with 48 parks and facilities along the way. You can drive the entire distance on street ways and you can also walk or ride your bike on the recently added hike and bike trail that ties in at different stops along the parkway. Its original designers had a unique theory to their plan and left us with a great theme, ‘American Naturalist'. It combines the European architecture with the American nature. Positive and progressive visionaries gave this heritage to the city and they try to maintain this attitude and vision as they continue to develop and keep up the system.

To help travel the parkway system signage will be placed along the route to give directions. It will mark significant spots along the way showing travelers where they are, where they can go, and also will mark historic spots. These have been in the works for a while now, but are planned to go up as soon as next week. They will be a great component to the trails and will also help to make it have a nicer curb appeal.

National-Professional-Fastpitch-Back to School Tour-October 1, 2010-St Joseph MO

A unique opportunity will take place in St. Joseph, MO on Friday, October 1^st, 2010 at Heritage Park Softball Complex at 6 PM.

The local community is invited out to watch some of the best women softball players in the world perform. There will be four, possibly more Olympians and many other star players. An exhibition game will take place against Missouri Western State University's softball team and following players will sign autographs and speak with fans.

The National tour travels around the world playing exhibition games as a way to promote softball and for different fundraising events. MWSU is the only Division II team on the 2010 schedule. The tour kicked off on September 10^th in Memphis and there will be a total of 15 stops. Some expected to play in St. Joseph are Cat Osterman, Andrea Duran, Fransesca Enea, Vicky, Galindo and Megan Willis.

Cheri Kempf , St. Joseph native, is the commission of the NPF. She is a local softball legend and will be traveling with the team and will be at Heritage Park on October 1^st. She is a former Griffon All American softball player, United States national team player, and current television softball analyst for ESPN, Fox Sports, and Cox Cable, she will also be available to speak to fans.

Admission will be $5 for all ages except children 6 & under will be free. The gates will open at 5 PM. Incase of rain there will be an alternate indoor location available for the players to hold a youth clinic in place of the exhibition game.

St. Joseph is a true softball/baseball town with a lot of history and great stories to tell. This is a wonderful opportunity and a great way to promote the city and MWSU. Also, a great experience for the MWSU softball team...they will get to be on the same field as these star athletes. They will learn a lot during the exhibition game and will also have the chance to get to know these pro athletes in which many of them probably have dreams to someday be. Softball fan or not, it isn't everyday you can go to see Olympians play a game, get their autographs and have the chance to talk to them. It will be a great experience for everyone that attends and will create memories to last a lifetime.

Em Chamas Brazilian Grill and Napoli's Italian restaurant are now open and doing business in downtown St. Joseph. Both offering a very unique menu, they hope to bring the boom back to downtown.

Em Chamas now open since the end of summer, brings you a traditional Brazilian Churrasco from the Pampas region of Southern Brazil flavor. It offers several cuts of beef, pork, lamb and chicken roasted over a wood fired grill. You are served by a style of table side service called ‘rodizio' which is controlled by the guests with a special design coin on the table. Em Chamas offers a unique type of dining for their guests. If you are looking for a change of menu or atmosphere this might be your type of place.

Napoli's opened last Wednesday in the building of formerly owned Kirkpatrick Café. Offering a full Italian menu at a very reasonable price. Owners based the restaurant on the belief that their customers are the utmost importance. The Rexha family has two other locations, one in Maryville, MO and the other in Sedalia, MO and now the 3^rd location here in downtown St. Joseph.

Both of the new additions to the downtown area will be great for the downtown community. Both offering unique experiences and wonderful tastes, it will hopefully help bring the downtown back alive. Saved-by-Office-Team-Mate..Medical-Emergency..Are-You-Prepared..Really?...St Joseph MO

It is my sincere hope that you will share this story with everyone you know, not for sympathy but how you could possibly save a life, MAYBE YOUR OWN!

Monday, I was driving down Ashland Avenue on my way to an appointment, suddenly my body became so weak! My car was going all over the road, my cell phone dropped onto the floor and when I tried to pick it up, it weighed a ton. Looking quickly in my rear view mirror, I could see a car following behind, so I immediately pulled the car over to the side of the road thinking they would stop. WRONG! The JackAss flew on by!

I started to call my hubby but my fingers were so weak it took 3-4 times before I could actually push the keypad on my i-phone. Gary is a very soft spoken guy and after I told him I needed HELP, I never was sure he was actually on the other end of the phone. I quickly called one of my Prudential Summers REALTORS® office Team-mates, Vanessa Shipers. Vanessa has a strong voice and I heard her say, I AM ON THE WAY!"

With-in what seemed like seconds, My Friend arrived, she took one look at me half in the car and half out of the car and called 911. At her side was my hubby of 45 years, HE HAD HEARD MY PLEA FOR HELP, but was visibly shaken by what he saw, his wife had suffered a STROKE!

Most likely, we all know the warning signs of a Stroke, however, the victim themselves can not necessarily see what has happened. Especially to an active person in good health with the exception of a few joint aches and pains.

Stroke education for patients and families:

Published in the Saint Luke's Brain and stroke institute, is the following.

The symptoms of stroke can include numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body, confusion with speech or not able to speak normally, sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, sudden onset of dizziness or loss of balance, trouble with walking: and a sudden severe headache with no known cause. Many patients do not recognize their symptoms as a stroke and wait for long periods before calling 911 or seeking medical help.

St Lukes Brain & Stroke Institute diagnosed my Stroke as Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), sometimes called a mini-stroke. It resolves itself and leaves no noticeable symptoms or deficits. Having a TIA is a warning that a person is at risk for having a more serious stroke.

Today, one week later, I returned to my office of Prudential Summers REALTORS® Team-Mates and certainly was glad to see each and every one of them.

God was with me that day! I will always be grateful to Vanessa for Saving My Life by calling 911.
